What is AmeriCorps*State and National Direct?AmeriCorps members are sponsored by national, state, and local nonprofit organizations. In order to meet the specific needs of the communities they serve, local AmeriCorps sponsors recruit and train AmeriCorps members themselves. The Corporation for National Service oversees AmeriCorps. What do LEAP-AmeriCorps Members Do?LEAP-AmeriCorps members addresses community needs by serving as Academic Coaches and Senior Counselors for LEAP's afterschool and summer programs. What are the benefits of being a LEAP-AmeriCorps member?LEAP-AmeriCorps members receive a bi-weekly stipend. Senior Counselor members who serve during our Summer Program also receive free housing for ten weeks in the New Haven neighborhood where they work. In addition, upon successful completion of their term, members receive a Segal American Education Award worth between $1,000 and $1,800, depending on the length of their service. These education awards can be used either as scholarship money towards tuition at any college or University, or used to repay existing student loans. Many colleges and Universities across the country will “match” the award by doubling its value when applied at their school, and/or also provide opportunities such application fee waivers and additional scholarships and assistantships reserved especially for AmeriCorps alumni.
