Because of LEAP »LEAP is an inspirational program that gives us many opportunities. While in LEAP, I try to learn as much as I can, so I can better myself in life and become a successful man! " —Lonzo, age 13 New Haven County Bar Association Book Giving2/4/2010 LEAP is grateful for our on-going partnership with the New Haven County Bar Association (NHCBA). For the past three years, the NHCBA, through its Foundation, has raised monies so that LEAP may buy books for all LEAP children. First initiated in the winter of 2007, book gifting events provide the opportunity for children to build their own libraries and to meet new community members. The event includes NHCBA members visiting each LEAP site, where they meet with children, talk about the path toward a career in law, and hand out books. This year, NHCBA also partnered with local Teach for America (TFA) staff to include small group reading time at the event. NHCBA members and TFA staff read with LEAP children, who were eager to ask questions about law and teaching. Each year, LEAP has used the funds to purchase award winning, age-appropriate books. This year's titles were: for our younger children: Ashley Bryan's ABC of African American Poetry (winner of the Coretta Scott King award) and for our older LEAP children: Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis (winner of the Newberry Honor and Coretta Scott King award).
